  • GCC countries have potential to boost region’s GDP by $2.5trillion in 10 years

The GCC countries could accelerate the region’s economic growth by adding more than $2.5 trillion to GDP over the next decade through productivity performance enhancement, a new study has revealed.

From the current 3.8 per cent growth to 5.4 per cent in 10 years, this upside of economic growth and prosperity prospects can be unlocked if GCC countries can “strategically improve their productivity performance by leveraging the Productivity Potential Index (PPI) to identify the weakest determinant of productivity and then lifting that to the level of the best-in-class countries,” the study pointed out.

The study, titled ‘In search of productivity: The next $50 trillion global economy’ by World Governments Summit in collaboration with Strategy& Middle East emphasises the importance of improvements in productivity performance, imposing the newly introduced PPI to identify and address the weakest determinant of productivity.
“The potential boost to GCC economic growth from a better understanding of the determinants of productivity is impressive and if its findings are acted upon, this could substantially improve the lives of people in the region over the next decade,” said Chadi Moujaes, partner with Strategy&, part of the PwC network. “We hope our research will help governments everywhere identify more accurately where they can make a significant difference to their productivity and economic growth performance.”

“At a time when the world is looking to become more sustainable, it is essential to have appropriate tools for measuring economic progress that take into account criteria such as the environment and biodiversity, along with a range of social capital measurements,” said Dima Sayess, partner and Ideation Center lead at Strategy&. “This new index fills an important gap.”

According to Gulf Investment Report 2023, published by Century International Holdings, the GCC can emerge as a global economic powerhouse with the combined GDP of its six countries doubling to $13 trillion, up from a projected $6 trillion by 2050, if the region embraces a green growth strategy, according to a research report.

The combined GDP of the GCC countries has already touched the $2 trillion mark and investment in green and sustainable projects could transform the region into a global powerhouse, according to the Gulf Investment Report.

Strategy& report’s key findings reveal that productivity, a fundamental measure of economic performance, has traditionally focused on goods and services production compared to input requirements. However, the conventional measures have often overlooked critical aspects of the modern era, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and social changes. The report introduces a forward-looking methodology that incorporates social capital, natural capital and institutional quality, alongside traditional measures like labour and human capital, physical capital, innovation and intangible capital.

The Productivity Potential Index is a framework presented in the report, complemented by an online policy simulator. This tool allows users to assess how 25 countries compare across 19 criteria grouped into six categories. The index’s estimated potential productivity answers the question of what a country’s productivity could be, given its endowments, if utilised as effectively as the average country in the sample.

  • Mumbai Congress worried after 2 top leaders quit party — ‘unhappy with high command’

Mumbai: Less than three months before the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress in Mumbai is in trouble with two senior leaders having left the party to join Maharashtra’s ruling coalition. Former Maharashtra minister and MLA Baba Siddique Thursday resigned from the Congress saying he had “certain compulsions that can’t be revealed”. He will join the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Saturday, he said. Last month, former MP and Union Minister Milind Deora left the Congress to join the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. The Maharashtra government is ruled by an alliance of the BJP, Shinde Sena and the NCP’s Ajit Pawar faction, which was a late entrant to the coalition last year. Congress sources told ThePrint that they feared more leaders, especially those who have been close to Deora and Siddique, may follow over the next few days. Mumbai Congress President Varsha Gaikwad, who took over the reins of the party’s city unit in June last year, told ThePrint that she could not be blamed for the defections, and that she was making every attempt to ensure the rest of the flock stayed together. “This is not about me… They are not leaving because of me,” she said. Gaikwad said that whoever wanted to go, had their own reasons, adding she was constantly in touch with the rest of the MLAs, who had “assured” her they would not leave. “Only the central leadership can fulfil that,” she added. The leader added she would visit Mumbai constituencies from next week, hold programmes and rallies. “The leaders are going but the ground workers are still with us,” she said. Also read: ‘Could have done better had we changed incumbent MLAs’ — Sachin Pilot on Congress’s Rajasthan drubbing ‘Siddique was demotivated with leadership’ Siddique, whose resignation came after a major 48-year stint in the party, had joined the Congress as a teenager. In a post on X, he wrote: “I joined the Indian National Congress party as a young teenager and it has been a significant journey lasting 48 years. Today I resign from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party with immediate effect.” His son Zeeshan is a Congress MLA. Speaking to reporters Thursday, Siddique said he had certain compulsions which he could not reveal, adding he would shoulder whatever responsibility his new party gave him. “I will work as effectively and loyally as I worked here (Congress),” he told reporters. A close associate of Siddique told ThePrint that he was “feeling demotivated with the state and central leadership”. “Despite spending years in the party, he wasn’t getting the chance to work the way he wanted to. He was also unhappy with the way the Shiv Sena UBT leaders were treating the Congress in the state,” the associate told ThePrint. He said Zeeshan, MLA from the Bandra East constituency, would follow in his father’s footsteps closer to the Maharashtra Assembly elections later this year. “It is just a matter of time before he quits,” another senior Congress leader told ThePrint. ThePrint reached Zeeshan Siddique via calls. This report will be updated if and when a response is received. Congress leaders are now apprehensive that more might abandon the party, embarrassing the top leadership since Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra” is slated to end in Mumbai on 20 March. Elon Musk has created a culture of peer pressure among his friends and business associates that encourages them to use drugs with him, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal that details how board members and directors of his various companies either participate in or enable his substance use to stay close to the billionaire.

At parties in recent years, Musk has been spotted taking ketamine recreationally through a nasal spray and drinking liquid ecstasy from a water bottle, The Journal reported, citing people who witnessed the drug use or were briefed about it.
Current and former Tesla and SpaceX directors and board members— some of whom have invested tens of millions of dollars in Musk’s companies or have significant stock options tied to their roles — have also used drugs with him, per the report.

The “volume” of Musk’s drug use has created a culture wherein his closest business associates fear losing their wealth and social status by upsetting the billionaire if they refuse to use drugs with him, The Journal reported.

Musk, his lawyer Alex Spiro, and representatives for Tesla and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Following a January 6 report by The Journal that detailed that the 52-year-old has used cocaine, LSD, ecstasy, and magic mushrooms over the years, Musk said in a post on X: “Whatever I’m doing, I should obviously keep doing it!”

Following the January report, which could potentially jeopardize Musk’s security clearance as well as the billions of dollars of government contracts enjoyed by SpaceX as a defense contractor due to federal regulations on drug use, NASA said in a statement: “The agency does not have evidence of noncompliance from SpaceX on how the company addresses the drug- and alcohol-free workforce regulations.”

Musk’s reported drug use has been at the center of recent controversies after reporting from The Journal indicated a former director at Tesla was so concerned about Musk’s drug use and unpredictable behavior that she chose not to stand for reelection to the electric car company’s board.

SpaceX executives also worried Musk was on drugs during a “cringeworthy” all-hands meeting, in which the billionaire arrived nearly an hour late, rambling and slurring his words for about 15 minutes before the meeting was taken over by the spacecraft manufacturer’s president.
