His team confirmed that he died on the morning of February 26 at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. “Pankaj Sir was suffering from prolonged illness and wasn’t keeping well for the last few days. He died this morning around 11 am at Breach Candy hospital,”

His daughter, Nayaab Udhas, posted a statement on Instagram confirming his death. “With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness. Udhas family (sic)”, it read. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 27, in Mumbai.

Beyond his musical achievements, Udhas was also known for his philanthropic endeavours, actively supporting charitable causes and initiatives aimed at social welfare. In 1989, he released an album, ‘Nabeel’, which became one of his best-selling albums. The first copy of the album was placed at an auction where it was sold for a whopping amount of Rs 1 lakh. The money was donated to the Cancer Patients Aid Association. The ghazal maestro also actively worked for Parents Thalassemia Unit.

Throughout his illustrious career, Pankaj Udhas released numerous albums and singles, many of which have become timeless classics. His hit songs such as ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’, ‘Aur Ahista’, and ‘Jeeye To Jeeye Kaise’ continue to resonate with listeners across generations.
